PHIST-PRODUCTIONS 2008 PRICING
Band Pricing | Solo Artist Pricing |
Artwork | Phist-Records Label | Web Hosting
Helpful Information | Replication vs.
Duplication
This years pricing is
easier and more affordable than ever!
Band pricing: 20.00
per recorded (song) minute. (Half-down to begin
recording, balance due when master is completed.)
Solo Artist pricing:
10.00 per recorded (song) minute. (Half-down to begin
recording, balance due when master is completed.)
Here’s the break
down…
Band pricing: 20.00 per
recorded minute. (20 minute project minimum).
Includes: Up to *12
recording sessions, microphone placement, setup time, recording, mixing &
mastering!
*Extra sessions add
2.00 more/session for each additional session. Most 60 minute projects get done
in under 10 sessions, the limit of 12 was put in as a safety measure to keep
projects moving along. Bands have up to
30 days to pay the remaining balance after the master has been completed. Afterwards an additional 1.00 per recorded
minute will be added to the balance every 30 days.
Example 1: Band
estimates that they will have 40 minutes of music to record. At 20.00/min band
pays half down (400.00) up front. The band ends up recording 38 minutes worth
of music taking 8 sessions to do so. Over the next few days mixes are done and are
approved by the band/producer. Mastering is then started and one by one the individual
song masters are approved. The band pays the remaining balance (38 actual min @
20.00 = 700.00 – 400.00 (minus down payment) remains = 300.00). The band then receives 2 master CD’s.
Example 2: Band only
wants to record one song equaling 3 minutes in length. Studio has an 20 minute
project minimum and the band pays 200.00 up front (half-down payment).
Recording, Mixing & Mastering is done. Band pays remaining 200.00 and
receives 1 master CD.
Example 3: “Example 2”
band decides to ad one more 4 minute song to they’re project. Since the mix & master were already
approved the band is again charged an 8 minute minimum (treated as a new project).
Band pays 80.00 up front (Save money, get 2 to 3 songs together first then record!)
The new song is added to the previous master. Band pays remaining 80.00
and receives 1 master CD.
Example 4: Band
records a 60 minute project paying 600.00 half-down. Band takes 15 sessions to
complete the project. The base price includes 12 sessions, each additional
session adds another 2.00/minute for each additional session. Band is charges
26.00/minute and pays the remaining 900.00 (after mixing & mastering has been
approved first). The band receives 2 master CD’s.
Example 5: Band
records a 60 minute project. Later they decide to throw away one song changing
the CD length now to 57 minutes. Band is still charged for 60 minutes,
explained: the fee is for 20.00 per “recorded song” minute not over-all CD
length. The discarded song is still given to the band on a “sample” CD.

Solo Artist pricing:
10.00 per recorded minute. (10 minute project minimum). Solo Artist (or single musician) require less
sessions and typically require fewer mixing hours. If however you’re a Solo Artist playing many
different instruments to “emulate” a band then you’ll still fall into the “Band
Pricing” category.

Artwork: Artwork fees depend on the project it
self. If a band has they’re own artwork
then layout fees only would be charge (20.00 is typical). If original artwork is needed then a
“brainstorm” session would be required between the artist and the band then a
price can be settled on.

PHIST-RECORDS: The “Phist-Records”
indie label is available per request but bands can only be accepted after
listened to. Bands accepted onto the Phist-Records label get a break on post
production cost as the band and Phist-Records become partners. This partnership
typically splits the post-production (replication, printing) fees and saves
both parties money. Then as a bonus Phist-Records sets up and host a band
webpage, places the band on phist-records iTunes & CDBaby pages as ell as it's own store front allowing the band to get free exposure to the growing
Phist-Productions/music community.

Web Hosting: Most
web-hosting Phist-Productions does is for the independent musician and music
related business but exceptions can be made for anyone interested in this
service. 5.00/month or 50.00/year is currently our rate paid via PayPal. We can help with basic Web Design as well but
our resources and time are limited so if a complicated time immersed web site
is desired then the customer might want to contact a professional web designer
to get there site created. Phist-Productions runs PHP, Pearl, Python and other CGI type engines and
should be able to cater to most web-masters requirements. Just drop us a line

Helpful information:
1: Drums are typically
recorded first, usually a Saturday afternoon session is used taking between 4
to 8 hours to complete. Depending on the situation drums can be recorded to a
click track (if desired) while another musician sits in the mixing room with
the engineer playing the rhythm tracks connected to a direct box and recording
console. Both musicians monitor each other through head phones and video monitor.
Be sure that the drums
are tuned (newer heads are preferred that have been broken in already) also be
sure that you know your songs as best as possible. This saves on wasting
recording session time and will aid in getting drum tracks completed within the
first couple sessions.
2: Have all songs
written before you record. Working bugs out of songs during recording time ends
up taking more sessions to record!
3: Try not to
over-work songs by adding too many unnecessary tracks. This can make songs
sound to busy and hard to differentiate between instruments.
4: Don’t beat your
project into the ground! Dig in, get in and get done! Projects that end up
taking months to complete create stress amongst band members. The faster you
get it done the happier everyone will be.
5: Remember the
money! Money creates more stress amongst
band members than anything. Have a game-plan coming into the studio, prepare a
month in advance and try to get the majority of money ready before recording
starts. Also remember that your CD master is just a start, do you want this
project professionally replicated?? 500 CD’s?
1000 CD’s?? This cost money and
many musicians have little of it, so get these problems worked out before the
project starts. Again this reduces the stress!
6: Recording goal
chart: If a band has they’re music polished and learned well enough the
following should be able to be met. The following would cover a 30 to 60 minute
project.
Session 1: Drums
Session 2: Drums & Drum re-do’s
Session 3: Guitar and Bass Tracks
Session 4: Guitar, Bass and Guitar, Bass
Re-do’s
Session 5: Guitar or other lead/solo
tracks, Begin Vocal tracks.
Session 6: Vocal tracks, Guitar or
other lead/solo re-do’s
Session 7: Vocal tracks.
Session 8: Vocal tracks. Vocal
re-do’s
Session 9: Vocal re-do’s, Instrument
re-do’s
Session 10: Vocal re-do’s,
Instrument re-do’s
Depending on studio
schedule and band size a typical 4 piece band should be able to get in up to 3
recording sessions a week. All day Saturday sessions are available and the
studio records on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (from 7:00pm to 9:00pm). Later when recording is completed Tuesday and Wednesday nights are
used to go over mixes and masters. The
above example would have the typical band done in about 4 to 6 weeks. Bands are allowed 1 “sample” CD per session to
go over recorded tracks and listen for mistakes/errors that need to be
re-recorded later.

Replication vs.
Duplication: So you got your master but
now what do you do? Having a good product means having a product that sounds
good and looks good too. Companies that Phist-Productions work with offer both
types of services “Replication” and “Duplication” but what is the right type of
product for you?
Basically
“Replication” means “Pressed”, a master DYE made of glass is used and CD’s are
made by injection molding. The data surface is protected with a varnish type
coating, these are the same CD’s that you by at your music store and if taken
care of could last you a life time.
“Duplication” is what
you do at home in your CD burner, that’s right a burned disc. The burned disc
does sound like the original but is less protected form the outside world. Also depending on the user most burned CD’s only
have a projected life span of 4 to 5 years. The CD’s have a photo reactive dye
between the layers that interacts with the “write” laser beam that allows data
to be embedded in the layer. The same dye is also sensitive to light and can be
damaged to prolong light/sun exposure.
So what is the best
type of disc for your project? If you only require 50 CD’s or so then going the
“Duplicated” burned route would be best for the cost. Some production houses
offer “laser printing” directly on the disc surface which makes them look more
professional as well. Duplicated CD’s usually don’t have any minimum run
charges and you can re-order no matter what the need at any time. (Duplicated
CD’s range from 1.85 – 2.50 per CD depending on amount ordered and packaging
desired).
Most production
houses require a 500 to 1000 CD minimum order for “Replicated” CD’s but if you
plan on selling 300 to 500 over a couple year period and your wanting to sound
and look as professional as possible then “Replication” is the only choice. All
Phist-Records signed bands use the “Replicated” method only. The CD’s are “silk-screened” and look very
professional. The same 500 to 1000
minimum order would have to be made if more CD’s were needed later.
(Replicated CD’s
range from .99 to 1.85 per CD depending on minimum amount ordered and type of
packaging desired.)

Professional Mastering Service: Additional
$5.00/min
If your project needs to be mass
produced then Professional Mastering Service might be that extra kick to help
your mix stand out. If the recording was done in house and you decide later to have your project mastered then we will have everything we need on file to get start on your project. If your project was recorded from an out side source then you would need to send your CD to us in a low volume format preferable audio levels set between -6 and 12db with no limiter or compression on the output, a 24bit DATA CD with WAV files is the prefered source but we'll try and work with what ever you give us to best of our ability. The listener does have the option of a sample as well to let you know for sure if we can help you out or not.
The average cost is $5.00/min if we receive the audio in the format provided. We are not miracle workers so bad mixes are bad mixes, but we can tell you what may be needed to turn your mix into a better mix by letting you know the problems we see which wiould let you go back to the studio and re-try the mixing process.

Audio Transferring, Restoration and Re-Mastering
Old 4 track recordings, Vinyl
Records, Cassette tapes and other forms of media of low recording quality can
be helped greatly by “flying” them into the Pro-Tools system and re-filtered,
edited and mastered to restore or to help pull out sounds that you want to hear
the most. Maybe you just want an old recording transferred to CD, or a skip in
an old record taken out; what ever the desire is Phist-Recording can help.
Since the processes are different for every project a sample will be restored
then sent to the user (if needed) and if satisfied a quote can be provided.
Email info@phist-producitons.com
and send info of the type of media you have that needs to be restored, edited
or mastered (example: ADAT, Vinyl Record,CD) and what
type of work your needing done and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
